In order to provide users with fast streamlined content without extra clutter, publishers can customize their mobile websites and offer AMP – offering superior readability, higher loading speed and improved performance that gets rid of undesirable distractions. AMP are created through open source so that anyone can collaborate and tailor their websites and simply relies on updating HTML scripts. All that it requires is for publishers to create a version of their website that conforms to the standards detailed by the AMP project. For example, an image tag will need to be replaced by a custom AMP tag. Doing this enables the AMP servers to control loading of the website and therefore prioritize certain requests over others. Basically, users will engage with the content as soon as possible because third party elements will only load afterwards. This helps prevent half-loaded websites or the need to re-render certain pages.

Google rankings are optimized to list AMP at the top of mobile search results. The first publishers to roll out AMP were mainly distributors of news content. For example, look up a recent news story on Google though your mobile device. A list of sites with AMP should appear and most of the time, these options are presented as a carousel of images. If you’re using a desktop computer, go to a news website like The Guardian. Click on any random article of your choosing. Now, add ‘/amp’ to the end of the address. Instantly, you will see the version that AMP provides. It’s cleaner, simpler and speedier when it comes to loading on mobile devices.
